The Gender, Equity, Media, and Society (GEMS) Research Lab is hosted in the Sociology Department at Western University, Canada. Dr. Kaitlynn Mendes is the Director.

The GEMS Lab brings together scholars and students interested in topics around gender, equity, media, and society.

The GEMS Lab is open to anyone interested in these topics who shares the following values:

• Intersectional feminist approach to research, training, and knowledge mobilization

• Reciprocity

• Inclusivity

• Care

• Generosity and humility in research

• Collaboration and fostering good relationships

• Research with people rather than on people

The Lab hosts regular meetings where we analyze and discuss academic papers, develop research ideas, share research findings (at all stages of progress), engage in professional development, and come together as a community in the pursuit of a more just and equitable world.

At GEMS, we envision a future where intersectional feminist and other critical thinking guides our work on the topic of gender, media and society. We see a world where empathetic engagement, reciprocal relationships, inclusivity, care, activism, and collaboration are embedded in all we do, driving new discoveries, fostering positive societal change, and amplifying marginalized voices.
